Jayapura, 29/4 (Jubi) – The situation in Dekai, Yahukimo Regency is currently peaceful after a dispute between the supporters of two political parties on Monday (28/4).
The dispute did not escalate thanks to the prompt action of the police, the regional secretary of Yahukimo Regency, Samuel Tandebura said by phone on Tuesday (29/4),
“The daily activities have resumed to normal,” he said.
Earlier, the dispute between the supporters of Golkar and PAN broke out in Dekai, the capital city of Yahukimo during a plenary meeting on the vote count results on Monday (28/4) at around 16:30 Papua time. The dispute prompted police to whisk the Commissioner of KPU Yahukimo to the local police headquarters.
The dispute started when a cadre of Golkar, Lasarus Giban and his supporters staged a peaceful protest to the Yahukimo Police requesting the local election commission to annul the voting results and to conduct a new vote. When the Giban’s supporters will move towards the police office, suddenly hundreds of PAN supporters with arrows and spears tried to stop them. The fighting erupted because the supporters of Golkar tried to fight back. But because they were outnumbered, they ran away.
Papua police spokesman Senior Commissioner Pudjo Sulistyo confirmed the incident. “The dispute between the supporters of two political parties occurred but it could be handled,” he said. (Jubi/Arjuna/rom)
