Sentani, Jubi, – Residents have ceased preventing the construction of the Waibron Landfill Site at Sentani Barat Sub-district following a dispute over land compensation from the government of Jayapura Regency, an coucillor said.

The reconciliation will pave the way for the operation of of the site later this year 2015, said the chairman of the Jayapura Legislative Council (DPRD), Edison Awoitu,  on Tuesday (20/1).
“Customary people never prohibited the construction of this landfill site, but what people need is transparency from all parties, including the government who should listen to their demands.”

He said this assurance was rising after the local councilors met and talked with the customary landowners at the Customary Council last week. Awoitu further said they have discussed several issues in the meeting, including the people’s request to the local government for completing a half of payment of the land take-over.
“Meanwhile the rest payment could be compensated by providing a job opportunity to the native youths at the government office that will manage this landfill site,” he said.

Related to this result, the Chairman of DPRD Jayapura guaranteed the construction of landfill site would keep going and it would be operated within this year.

Separately, the Head of DKPP Office of Jayapura Regency, Zakarudin said the operation of the Waibron Landfill Site is only waiting for the agreement between the local government and the customary landowners.
“It has become our program in this year. The temporary dumping ground is no longer enough to accommodate the garbage, we need a bigger area and the landfill site is a right solution,’ he said. (Engelberth Wally)
