Jayapura, 2/6 (Jubi) – The Papua General Election Commission (KPU) remained defiant after Sarmi residents threatened to boycott the elections over the delay in inaugurating the regency’s election commissioners.

KPU Papua chairman Adam Arisoy said he is not afraid of being reported to the police.
“If you want to report us, please. We don’t want to take the risks and be confronted to the Honorary Council of Election Organizers (DKPP), “Adam told reporters in Jayapura on Thursday (2/6).

He the selection of KPU members had been conducted independently and without pressure from any person or group.

He said Sarmi KPU members would be installed soon.
“The delay in the inauguration of the KPU members of Sarmi is because there were problems in the use of funds in the selection process of top ten candidates,” he said.

According to the secretary of the KPU Sarmi,  the state budget was not used in the selection process, raising suspicions that the KPU Papua had not acted independently.

The budget provided by the state for  the recruitment of regency/city KPU members amounted to Rp.600 million.
“We just got the report from the Secretary of the Election Commission (KPU) Sarmi, and we want to investigate it,” he said.

Earlier, representatives of political parties and the communities in Sarmi held a demonstration at the KPU Papua office.

They urge the KPU Papua to immediately install the elected members of KPU Sarmi and threatened to boycott the elections if their demands were not met. (Jubi/Alex/Frans)
