Jayapura, 15/5 (Jubi) – A number of Papua local heads’ relatives have been confirmed to have won seats in the local and national parliaments. Six legislative candidates have close relations with the local heads.
Those who will sit in the House of Representatives are Yakoba Yola Lokbere, wife of the Jayawijaya regent, Khristina Luluporo, wife of the Jayapura mayor, John Banua Rouw, brother of the Yapen regent, Ferdinand Tinal, brother of the vice governor.
Those who won seats in the Papuan legislative council include Lindert Kristo Ibo, son of the Puncak Jaya regent and Robert Rouw, brother of the Yapen regent.
A Kotaraja resident, Patricia hoped their presence in parliament would betray their role in monitoring the performance of the executive.
“But I doubt whether they would dare to criticize the performance or the policy made by their husband, father or brother if it was not proper. If it happened, we don’t know who’s actually in control,” she told tabloidjubi.com on Thursday (15/5).
Another resident, Josep Maniani, called the phenomenon of well-connected people winning parliamentary seats was normal, but question whether their presence really represents the voice of the people. (Jubi/Arjuna/rom)
