Jayapura, Jubi – Dozens of mortar shells believed to the leftovers from World War II were found by residents in Dok V Atas, North Jayapura.

North Jayapura police chief, assistant commissioner police Wilhelmus Ajomi said as many as 28 mortars were discovered but it was not clerar if they were still active.

Last week, residents found 11 mortars wheile digging the soil embankment and then a team of Papua Mobile Brigade ( Brimob) went to the location and found 17 mortars.

“A team of Papua Police Mobile Brigade immediately dug for other mortars and managed to find 17 mortar shells,” said Ajomi on last week.

According to him, dozens of mortar shells are now secured in Brimob Papua Police. He said police now allowed residents to continue their works at the site.

“But we remind them to be careful. If they find it again, please immediately report to the police, “he said.

While one of the people who found the mortar first, Albert said, when he was digging with the heavy equipment, he found a mortar. After some time he and his colleagues dug and got 10 mortar shells at the same location.
