Wamena, Jubi – The arrest of suspected thief Robby Pekey who was shot on his leg on 21 June 2015 by Jayawijaya Police is considered as a mistaken identity.

The Coalition for Peace and Human Rights of Central Highland and the victim’s family said the police’s statement contradicted the victim’s testimony.

According to Coordinator of Coalition for Peace and Human Rights of Central Highland, Theo Hesegem, the victim said on 13 June 2015, he was in a shop located at Jalan Trikora Wamena searching the motorcycle spare parts. But his friend with initial MM came to see him and pledged his motorbike and promised to pay his debt soon. But because of his friend never came up to pay the motorbike, he used it for daily transport.
“The victim has mentioned it to the police soon after being shot at Jalan Irian, but the police ignored it and he was shot once again on the left leg and beaten on the mouth and eye,” Hesegem told reporters in Wamena last week.

Earlier it was reported that before the shooting, the police has followed the victim for being accused to rob a woman named Lemima Wenda at Jalan Irian on Friday, 19 June 2015. But based on his testimonial, he was at Agus Pekey’s house located at Jalan SD. Percobaan Potikelek Wamena. And at 12:30 Papua time, he went to student dormitory checking his friends who also prepare to work at Wamena Public Hospital. He worked in hospital from 14:00 to 21:30 Papua time.
“Based on the following facts, we believe Roby Pekey is the victim and isn’t suspected thief on 19 June 2015 as well as not stealing the motorbike as accused by the police,” said Theo Hesegem.

On the other hand, the member of Coalition for Peace and Human Rights of Central Highland and also a lawyer Yance Tonouye asked the police to thoroughly investigate the case of motorbike stealing that was pawned to Robey Pekey and the crime over Lemina Wenda.
“We are strongly supporting the police in reveling the case of motorbike stealing and mugging, but it should be in accordance to the procedure. They should further check the involvement of Roby Pekey, whether he was a suspect or only a victim,” said Yance Tonouwe (Islami/rom)
