Jayapura, 23/1 (Jubi) – People of Papua fully support the struggle of the Independent Journalist Alliance (AJI) Jayapura to announce the press freedom situation in the hearing at the Subcommittee on Human Rights of EU Parliament, Brussels, Belgium, Thursday (23/1).
We support the announcement on the press silencing in Papua that has been discussed in the parliament,” the activist of Youth, Student and People’s Movement of Papua (GEMPAR) from Sekolah Tinggi Ummel Mandiri Jayapura, Donatus Pombay said.
He wishes that in the future, there were a positive impact on the press freedom in Papua after the hearing by AJI Jayapura in EU Parliament. We do hope that in the future the international press will be able to come here for seeing the current situation in Papua,” Donatus said.
Further he said that he was very concerned because certain parties also silenced the national press when they want to broadcast about Papua. Besides the access to international journalist for coming to Papua, he wishes that there were the freedom for the press enterprise in reporting. “We also hope that the press could report the right information to the people,” he said during the action of GEMPAR to support the hearing in the UE Parliament.
