Jayapura, 1/6 (Jubi) – Papua’s Transportation Department will recommend three locations in Jayapura, Keerom and Grimi Nawa for a new international airport.
“The assessment would start around June-July, and the early mapping has been done. We searched three locations to be proposed as the location for the international airport,” the head of Papua’s Transportation Department, Yusuf Yambeyadi, said on Friday (29/5) in Jayapura.
Of the three proposed locations, the Transportation Department is recommending the existing Sentani airport, which is located in the Jayapura Regency.
“We will decide which of the three is the most feasible,” he said.
He further said to become an international airport; the location should be in particular have no flight obstacles, and could fit international requirements and help contribute to local development.
When asked when the airport would be constructed, Yambeyadi said his office has conducted the feasibility study, but there are other steps to be taken.
“So we had the master plan, but technically it needs to be verified by the team from the central government whether the it’s feasible for an international airport or not. But clearly the determination of the location should be completed within this year,” he said. (Jubi/Alex/rom)
