Jayapura, Jubi – Members of the Papua Legislative Council (DPRP) have questioned why the region’s version of Batik is being produced in Pekalongan, Central Java.
Members of Commission II of DPRP Papua plan to go to Pekalongan and see for themselves how Papua batik is being made there and why.
Commission member Pendis Enumbi said the team will be led by Commission II chairman Deerd Tabuni.
Based on information, the making of Papua batik outside Papua has been done for years.
“We do not want Papua batik to be made outside Papua, because it is a culture of Papua. Why others can take the right of making batik Papua? Who gives a patent or a license to print outside Papua? We’ll find out, ” Enumbi said via phone on Monday (25/05/2015).
According to him, when batik Papua is manufactured outside Papua, the money would only be enjoyed by people there. “If batik Papua produced in Papua, will certainly add more local incomes (PAD). We will try to make batik Papua produced in Papua as it is part of native Papuan culture,” he said.
Tabuni has earlier said batik Papua should be printed in Papua and not in Java.
“Papuans can create in their own land without having taken out from Papua. It is killing the creativity of Papua,” Tabuni said at the time. (Arjuna Pademme/ Tina)
