Flood in Jayapura city (Jubi)
Jayapura , 30/4 ( Jubi ) – The Papua Legislative Council ( DPRP) has invited the mayor of Jayapura to discuss ways to deal with flooding in the city.
The meeting on Wednesday ( 30/4 ) was attended by the Department of Public Works ( PU) and Jayapura municipality, Transportation Department and other relevant agencies.
First deputy chairman of DPRP, Yunus Wonda said all parties must make efforts to prevent future flooding.
“There should be no more victims. I think we need to take firm and concrete steps to resolve this problem. There needs to be short and long-term programs,” he said.
Chairman of Commission D overseeing infrastructure, Yan P Mandenas said this meeting was deliberately held to hear the problems directly.
” This problem can not be left out. Therefore we must overcome together. The drainages around Jayapura city needs to be fixed so that water can flow properly, ” Mandenas said.
Jayapura Mayor Benhur Tommy Mano said, before the floods occurred, his administration had established a disaster response team.
“The municipality government works according to the rules.There are road districts , cities and provinces. We should not blame each other. Yes,there are many poor drainage which need to be addressed . We always try to move quickly to handle disasters , ” Mano said. ( Jubi / Arjuna/ Tina )
