Timika, Jubi – Papua Governor Lukas Enembe refused to support the plan to establish new autonomy regions in Mimika Regency.

The Mimika Regent Eltinus Omaleng told in Timika on Tuesday (19/5/2105) he frequently came to Jayapura to meet with the Governor Lukas Enembe to submit team proposal concerning the establishment of proposed Mimika Barat Regency and Mimika Timur Regency. But the governor is persisted not giving any recommendation on the proposal because he thought it could be used as administration prerequisite in completing the plan to establish the Central Papua Province in Timika.
“I have forwarded the proposal from the new region team to the governor, but he just skipped. He doesn’t want the Central Papua Province to establish in Timika. The plan on the formation of new regencies has connection with the plan to set up the Central Papua Province. Thus he declined both,” Omaleng said. But he didn’t mention the reason behind the governor’s decision declining the formation of Central Papua Province with Timika as the capital.

However, he said if two proposed regencies were approved then the Central Papua Province would be then the Central Papua Province would be automatically established due to the eligibility of its coverage regions. “If two new regencies were set up, thus like or dislike the Central Papua Province would be automatically materialized. So the governor refused to sign the letter of recommendation on the formation of two new regencies,” Omaleng said.

He also admitted up to now the Mimika Regional Government does not provide any financial support to the formation team of new regencies. “They never reported the expenditure from previous grant as if it was their own money, so they could spend it all without a report,” said Omaleng.

For last few years, he said, the Mimika Regional Government always allocated fund to support the activities of the formation team of new regencies. “Every year the government allocated Rp 1 billion, Rp 900 million and so on. Do not consider it was private money. So, they must report it,” he said.

The struggle to materialize two new autonomy regions in Mimika Regency namely Mimika Barat Regency and Mimika Timur Regency has reached to the level of Parliament’s Commission II in Jakarta.

The Mimika Barat Regency proposed Kokonao as the capital and will cover the entire sub-district at the northern region of Mimika Regency, including Mimika Tengah, Mimika Barat, Amar, Mimika Barat Tengah and Mimika Barat Jauh. Meanwhile the Mimika Timur Regency proposed Agimuga as the capital and will cover several sub-districts of eastern region of Mimika Regency, including Agumuga, Jita, Jila, Alama and Hoeya. (*/rom)
