Jayapura, 18/12 (Jubi/Dancing Turtle) – We are happy to announce the release of a new album of freedom songs, from exiled West Papuan band, the Lani Singers.
Since their arrival in the UK in 2004 the family have used music as a tool to share the story of the ongoing struggle for freedom being fought by their people in West Papua.
In 2008 they released their debut album Ninalik Ndawi (Freedom Song) to critical acclaim. This new album Ninalik Arirak was recorded over a 6 month period in their adopted hometown of Oxford. The songs provide a moving insight into their struggle in exile. They are also joined on this new album by some of their children. A new West Papuan musical tradition is being formed 9000 miles away from their homeland.
The songs are steeped in the rich traditions of the Lani tribe as well as being reflective of their plight. These are songs of hope, love and pain. These are their songs of freedom.
