Jayapura, 19/2 (Jubi) – About 5,000 soldiers will be deployed to help safeguard the upcoming legislative elections in Papua province, said the commander of Cendrawasih XVII military garrison.
“The deployment of troops would not be for a specific area in Papua. All regions are considered vulnerable, so security is done thoroughly. The military personnel only to help (backing up) the police,” said Maj. Gen. Christian Zebua on Wednesday (2/19).
The commander said the personnel would be deployed to the battalion level, while for every police station there would be about 100 soldiers.
“Yes indeed, there are some areas that are highly vulnerable for example in Puncak Jaya, but there is no special treatment. There is nothing going on out there,” he said.
He said the troops are still in the barracks.
“At the moment, we are taking more preventive measures,” he stated.
The military on Tuesday began a three-day meeting with Papuan Police Chief Inspector General of Police Tito Karnavian, Papua Governor Luke Enembe, a representative from West Papua, Michael Manufandu to discuss security measures for the elections ( 2/ 20). (Jubi / Arjuna/ Tina)
