Manokwari, Jubi – Manokwari regent Bastian Salabai aurged owners of customary land rights to support the government’s program to extend the runway of Rendani airport, West Papua.
“The Manokwari government asked the local communities to be willing to release 500 meters of land for the extension of the airport runway,” Salabai said in Manokwari on Sunday (28/6).
He said the government will pay compensation as long as they are willing to release the land.
The current length of Rendani airport’s runway is 2,000 meters and unable to accommodate big aircraft such as Boeing 800 series.
The government wants to extend the runway to 2,500 meters so that large aircraft can land.
Salabai said he hoped the support of the customary communities to release land for the extension of the runway because the budget is provided by the central government in this case the Ministry of Transportation.
He explained that the minister of transportation, Ignatius Jonan during his visit in Manokwari some time ago approved Rendani airport runway extension of 500 meters.
“The Ministry of Transportation will provide its budget while the task of local government is to release the land for the extension of the runway,” regent added. (*/ Tina)
