Sentani 26/2 (Jubi) – Jayapura Regent Mathias Awoitauw warns his residents not to treat malaria as a common disease.
“It should also be remembered by pregnant women,” Awoitauw told tabloidjubi.com in Sentani on Wednesday (26/2).
“Pregnant women who suffer from malaria can give birth to a baby with decreased intelligence and health. Malaria is an important issue because it is one of the indicators of success under the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs,” he said.
Malaria can lead to socio-economic problems, low quality of maternal and child health, he said.
The head of the Health Department of Jayapura regency, KhairulLie echoed Awoitauw.
He said he hoped that the improvement of medical services and facilities in Jayapura regency could benefit residents and allow them to get better treatment.
“It necessary to provide adequate health personnel and also the involvement of non-health personnel and communities in order to control and combat malaria,“ he said.
Three personnel from each village and PLA (Participatory Learning and Action) facilitators, who are government officials, work as coordinators. While, the number of PLA facilitators per village is 2-5 people depending on the number of population.
Both village cadres and PLA facilitators will get similar training. Each of them will learn about their specific roles and functions so that there will not be overlaps on the ground. (Jubi / D Budiman/ Tina)
