

Hundreds of people blocked the Mimika Regent’s office (Jubi)
Jayapura, 5/3 (Jubi) – Hundreds of people blocked the Mimika Regent’s office demanding the government go ahead with plans to hold local elections on March 29.
A resident of Kuala Kencana Sub-district of Mimika City, Hasanuddin who saw the protest said hundreds of people who were supposedly the supporters of two candidates blocked the regent’s office. “They asked the regent to allocate a budget for the election of local heads on 29 March,” he said by phone on Wednesday (5/3).
The mass blockage occurred between 7.30 am to 4 pm.
The Mimika Election Commissioner on Technical Division, Ambrosius Lamera, said the protest disrupted government activities
“The government activities were halted because people have been blocked the regent’s office,” he said by phone.
Further he confirmed that the commission has decided to schedule the election for March 29. “If it’s delayed, it will overlap with the schedule of the legislative elections on April 9,” he said.
Acting regent Ausilius Yous could not be contacted to comment about the protest.
A Papuan Election Commissioner in charge of public information, Musa Sombuk , local elections had been delayed three times . “If not mistaken they have determined the schedule on 28 or 29 March. It indicates that they still have no budget until today,” Musa said in his office on Wednesday. (Jubi/Indrayadi Th/rom)
