Jayapura citi after floods (Jubi)
Jayapura, 24/2 (Jubi) – Water supplies to parts of Jayapura will be disrupted for next few days after flooding that hit the city damaged the Regional Tap Water Company (PDAM)’s reservoir in Kali Biru Kloofkamp.
Meke Dacosta, an official at PDAM, told tabloidjubi.com on Monday (24/2) that some water pipes were also broken.
“This is the first time in the city’s history that the water basin inherited by the Dutch has been seriously damaged,” a resident of Dok V Jayapura, Devi, told to tabloidjubi.com on Monday (24/2).
The floods also damaged a number of houses there.
Jayapura City was awarded Adipura by the Environment Ministry for its success in improving environmental management in 2013. But on Sunday (23/2) the city, which will celebrate its 104th anniversary on 7 March, was inundated by waters and mud.
The flooding, triggered by heavy rains on Saturday night, submerged the city’s offices, shopping centers, houses.
Five people were killed, four injured and three still missing in landslides caused by the flash floods.
As of Monday afternoon (24/2), several office buildings, including the Papua Police Headquarters, the Transportation Department Office, the Papuan House of Representatives, and the Governor’s Office were still covered by mud. the Civil Service Police Unit guarded the Governor’s Office, scanning visitors’ vehicles. Several schools and the the biggest shopping center in town, Jayapura Mall, were closed. (Jubi/Musa/rom)
