Merauke 5/2 (Jubi) –  Merauke could be hit by flash floods because it lies up to three meters below the sea level, warned the chairman of the House of Representatives (DPRD) of Merauke regency, Leonardo Mahuze.

“To avoid such a disaster, Merauke government must take several immediate concrete steps.” he said in a speech at the closing of a discussion on RAPBD ( Regional Annual Budget Plan) at DPRD on Tuesday ( 2/4).
Mahuze further said, some locations such as Lampu Satu beach, Wendu and Okaba are vulnerable  to flash floods  and urged the Government to build dykes to cope with rising tides and minimize coastal abrasion.
“I think this is a serious issue and has been a source of public concern. So, it must be addressed immediately by the government. If it is ignored, there will be a disaster that affect many people’s lives.” he said.
Mahuze also urged Regional Government Working Units (SKPD) to implement its programs for the benefit of the people.
Merauke Regent Mbaraka Romanus said in his speech a number of priority programs, including coastal reclamation,  need to be implemented immediately.
“There are a number of vulnerable locations that are of serious concern for the government to address” he said. (Jubi / Ans/Tina)
