Jayapura , 31/1 ( Jubi ) – A statement from Papua Police deputy chief, Brig.Gen. Paul Waterpauw against Yemiter Telenggen was considered excessive and emotional.
“He should have used a benchmark for law or rule by law in his statement instead of saying things based on what he wants emotionally and arrogantly. ” said Olga Helena Hamadi , Coordinator of Kontras Papua to tabloidjubi.com via mail on Friday ( 31/1 ) .
According to Olga, it is true that there are some assault and shooting incidents that resulted civilian casualties as well as officials and it is a must to conduct law enforcement.
” We agreed the need to conduct law enforcement but we have to understand what type of law enforcement and how it must uphold the presumption of innocence so that will avoid personal intention and interest.
Olga added, If arrogance is put-upon this case, will not solve the problem.
” The death penalty will not solve the problem in Puncak Jaya. ” she said .
Wilem Rumasep , executive chairman of the Papuan Customary Council said that the law enforcement ( Penegak hukum ) should be fair to apply the death sentence. The police who shoot the civilians must be sentenced death penalty as well .
” The death penalty should be given to the itchy hands of the police who shot brutally too. If it is only subjected to Yemiter, it does not make sense because the person has not been approved guilty in his involvement. ” said Rumasep .
Olga Hamadi also thought that it would be better if the government pays attention on legal solution through a causal- facts matter .
” Why did the incident happen continuously ? The government should think of a solution but unfortunately put legal process aside. “said Olga . (Jubi/Mawel/Tina)
