Jayapura, 2/7 (Jubi) – Residents who cross the border between Indonesia and Papua New Guinea must undergo security checks, the military said.

The Military Regional Command XVIII Cenderawasih said it would provide metal detectors for the police, military and the immigration office at the border.
“We are ready to lend detectors to the security forces at the border in order to check the residents who enter the border area,” said Major General Christian Zebua, the Commander of the Military Regional Command XVIII Cenderawasih on Wednesday (2/7).

According to him, the security forces worried about people carrying weapons to the border.

When asked about the circulation of illegal weapons in Papua, he said the perpetrators would be more careful to supply the firearms from outside. Moreover the Police and the Military are making efforts to prevent its distribution.
“We not only prevent the smuggling at the seaport but also at mountainous area. No weapons should be enter the areas which have been the basis of the armed groups, especially in the Papua Highland area, because that would be a victim is the people, security forces and their own group,” he said.
