Jayapura, 14/4 (Jubi) – Biak Numfor Regency has urged the government to immediately reopen the Kaisepo Airport for international flights.
“To reopen the Kaisepo airport as an international airport has been included in my agenda for a long time. Besides Jakarta and Makassar, we must also have an international airport in Papua,” Biak Numfor Regent Yesaya Sombuk told tabloidjubi.com in Jayapura City on Monday (14/4).
He said the reopening of the airport would reduce costs of international travel among Papuans.
“Within one or two weeks, I will solve the issue of land tenure rights and then communicate with the Angkasapura management to discuss related issues to realize the re-opening of the Frans Kaisepo International Airport,” he said after his inauguration as Biak Regent in February 2014.
Earlier, a tourism observer, Mian Sumanjuntak said few tourists come to Papua because there is no direct flight to Papua. from outside Indonesia.
The opening of the international airport in Papua is expected to boost the regional economy and increase the state’s income. (Jubi/Albert/rom)
