Merauke, Jubi – The Merauke penitentiary has already carried out an assimilation program for inmates by allowing them to work in the field, wash motorbikes and clean marketplaces, a correction official said.
Victor Apono, development and education section chief of the Merauke Prison told Jubi on Tuesday (04/28/2015) that approximately 60 inmates would be given time out of prison to carry out these activities.
Related to the opening of the agricultural land in Serapu, he said the priosn sent 12 inmates every day accompanied by several guards to work there. “Every day, they routinely go to Serapu and take care for the rice crop that has been planted,” he said.
In the coming months, rice planted will be ready harvested. “O ur priority for this program is inmate from Papua. This training is to help and guide them to do such work after completion of a sentence, “he said.
Merauke Regent, Romanus Mbaraka supported such programs as it indirectly trained them to have skills.
“I hope that after completion of their sentences, they can carry out these activities in the community,” he said. (Frans L Kobun)
