Jayapura, Jubi – Police have questioned 35 peoples in connection with last week’s rioting in Karubaga, Tolikara, Papua.
Papua Police General Crime Directorate ( Ditreskrimum Papua Police ) Dwi Riyanto in Jayapura, Tuesday (21/07/2015), said 6 out of 35 people who were questioned are members of the police and acted as witnesses.
“Some of the witnesses are those who are the victim of rock-throwing while conducting the Eid prayer in front of the Koramil Karubaga field,” he said.
Police investigators are still collecting evidence and statements from the witnesses, both the victims and those who saw the incident.
According to Dwi Riyanto, currently Ditreskrimum Papua Police deployed 12 investigators to assist the local police station in uncovering cases of attacks against Muslims who were praying ied and burning kiosks that also led to the burning mushalla around the stalls.
“For the case of a shooting that occurred shortly after the attack by throwing the Eid prayer worshipers are being examined by Propam Papua Police,” said Commissioner Dwi Riyanto.
Incident in Karubaga was allegedly due to a letter issued by the Working Committee of the Evangelical Church in Indonesia (BP GIDI) Tolikara dated July 11, 2015.
BP GIDI Tolikara in a circular dated July 11, 2015 prohibited Muslims form conducting Eid prayers, as well as other religions and other denominational churches from establishing places of worship in Tolikara. (*/Tina)
