Merauke, Jubi (19/2) – A boat carrying 26 Indonesian fishermen has been stranded in Papua New Guinea (PNG waters, the Merauke Search and Rescue Agency said.
The Indo Lautan Sakti boat was carrying fishermen from Bitung, North Sulawesi when it had engine troubles, causing it to stray to PNG.
A Merauke SAR spokesman, Darmawan, told tabloidjubi.com on Wednesday (2/19) that the agency received the report about the ship on Tuesday and immediately dispatched 18 personnel and 3 marines.
“Unfortunately, they had to return because of the bad weather conditions and high waves. This morning I just got a report again that the ship entered PNG waters,” Darmawan said.
All the people on the boat were in good condition, he said.
“We plan to make a rescue attempt again, but since the ship has entered the waters of PNG, our members could not come up there,” he said.
He he said he was coordinating with SAR Pusatagar and seeking the help of the Australian Marine Safety Authority (AMSA) to evacuate the fishermen and the crew. (Jubi / Frans L Kobun/ Tina)
